Autism news: How long will my child be in pull-ups?
September 18, 2024
Hello!

I remember when potty training was one of my biggest worries. I wondered how long my son would be wearing pull-ups.

When they’re still not trained, we fret about how independent they will be as they grow older. And how much all those diapers are costing us. And what snide remarks the in-laws will make at the next family reunion.

I wondered if he would still be wearing diapers as an adult. My fears ran wild.

I now believe those fears were unfounded. My son is on the severe end of the spectrum, and we finally figured out what worked for him.

The key, for him, was to work WITH his autistic characteristics and not against them.

Here’s an example. Have you ever heard of the “potty training in one day” method? It sounds fantastic. When I heard about it, I bought the book and read it. I thought, “Yay! Let’s get this done in one day!”

NOT.

Ever tried to get autistic children to change their routine THAT fast?

That method seems to work well for typical children and some disabled children. But unfortunately, I believe it's unrealistic for many children with autism.

It became clear that my son needed a whole new approach. If I wanted him to change something as major as toileting habits, I needed to help him over that resistance-to-change hurdle.

That’s the basic idea behind my potty training method. Learn more here about how to help your child learn these essential daily living skills.

Warm Regards,
